Wild Outside Program Participant

Organization: WILD Outside St. John's (Canadian Wildlife Federation)

Description: WILD Outside is a national conservation-based youth leadership program designed for youth ages 15 to 18. By participating in this immersive program, young Canadians will experience opportunities for personal growth while developing and encouraging their own “conservation ethic”. Learning from CWF facilitators alongside their peers, youth who join the WILD Outside program will connect with other local participants in the planning and delivery of community-based action projects in their own community.

Calling all youth ages 15-29: Learn to Teach Someone 1-on-1

Organization: Youth Empowering Parents

Description: A free virtual summer program for students who want to gain leadership skills, enhance their communication abilities, learn to be more persuasive, receive valuable experience for post-secondary applications, and get volunteer hours.   This program has been provided to over 300 post-secondary students at York University enrolled in Teachers College. We’ve adapted it for all interested youth (ages 15+)!   Program dates: July 4th to September 2nd   Here’s what you will do:  
  1. You will meet with our team on Zoom and get trained on how to teach.
  2. You will teach at least 2 people (e.g. an adult, a senior in your neighbourhood) a skill you have, once or twice a week. It could be technology skills, English skills or something else.
  3. You will continue to meet with our team on Zoom 2-3 times a week. You’ll talk about your successes and challenges, and learn new skills.
  The program is run by a subject-matter expert who has trained over 5,000 students to become amazing elementary and high school teachers. He has taught at York University, University of Toronto, and several US universities (e.g. UConn, Drake University).   Here’s what you will learn:  
  • How to give clear & step-by-step instructions;
  • Techniques for patience when dealing with challenging situations;
  • Picking the right words to communicate things clearly and concisely;
  • Changing your instruction style for people who learn in different ways;
  • Creating your own lesson plans;
  • Learning different ways you can evaluate if someone is learning what you’re teaching them; and
  • Customized feedback, depending on your specific needs
  Here’s how you will benefit:  
  • Get lots of volunteer hours (over 100+ hours);
  • Get a reference letter for a job, scholarship, or a post-secondary / teachers college application;
  • Get a certificate and a LinkedIn recommendation upon successful completion of the program;
  • Get real-life experience teaching someone (1-on-1 or in small groups);
  • Improve communication, problem-solving, creativity and integrative-thinking skills; and
  • Learn what University students are learning, for free.

Join ClimateScience as a Community Coordinator! [Remote]

We believe education is the most powerful tool in the fight against climate change. POSITION Help fight against climate change by joining our team at ClimateScience! As a Community Coordinator, you would help recruit people to be a part of our team, actively participate in meetings and events, form partnerships with schools and organizations, and learn more about climate change through our website. You have the chance to gain new experiences and connections, opportunities to earn leadership positions, build your resume, and acquire skills, all while being part of a fun community! Community Coordinators must be interested in learning more about climate change and passionate about bringing climate education into their own communities, and a flexible schedule would be a bonus. RESPONSIBILITIES Recruit people to join ClimateScience Canada. Attend weekly meetings with other members of the team. Will work within their community to create and implement long-term projects that help address climate change on a local level. Can include: research, outreach, document writing, skill-building. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR CROSS-COUNTRY SERIES FOR SCHOOLS

Description: Do you need volunteer hours, or an excuse to get out of the house on a Saturday morning? Volunteering with NLAA is a fun way to earn your volunteer hours, while learning new skills, meeting new people, and giving back to the community. No previous experience necessary. The Newfoundland and Labrador Athletics Association (NLAA) is the sole governing body in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador for the sport of Athletics. We organize events for Cross-Country, Track & Field, and Road Races for people of all ages and athletic abilities.

  • Course sweeper - Following the last runner so one gets left behind

Mummers Festival 2022 Volunteers Needed!

The Mummers Festival hosts a series of events and workshops all leading up to the Mummers Parade. The 14th Annual Mummers Festival will run November 26th to December 10th. Shuttle Van Driver, Daffodil Place Lodge, St. John's, NL

Description: Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) Lodges provide a supportive environment for people with cancer and their adult companions.  The Lodge is located near the cancer treatment centre in St. John’s. As a volunteer driver at the Lodge you have an essential role in creating a home away from home for the clients and their families. You have a positive impact on the quality and enhancement of life for people affected by cancer. WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING promoting a social and caring atmosphere in the lodge and shuttle van, focusing attention and time on lodge guests; maintain a regular schedule, leaving Lodge 30 minutes prior to each appointment; ensuring clients and guests get to their appointments on time; Helping with mobility aids and getting guests to appointments safely, providing additional assistance if required; Referring any client safety or medical issues to the lodge coordinator or manager, and reporting to the lodge coordinator or manager at the end of shift to ensure all clients have returned; Maintaining communication while off-site by using the driver’s cell phone when it is safe and appropriate to do so – not while driving Ensuring the van is clean and has gas before and after use, and completing the inspection checklist, noting any issues and reporting damage to the lodge manager immediately Following all COVID guidelines as set out by the Lodge Promoting the Lodge & Canadian Cancer Society activities, & support services WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR Friendly and outgoing; comfortable working with a variety of people Experienced driver with a valid class 5 license and a safe driving record with 3 or fewer demerit points and an acceptable driving record Willing to have a criminal records check and regular driver checks completed Physically able to carry out the duties of the role, safely and appropriately Good communication skills with clear voice; compassionate and patient OUR INVESTMENT CCS Volunteer and Support Program orientation and ongoing training Lodge and role specific orientation and ongoing training Volunteer handbook and modules N95 masks will be provided to the driver All clients will wear proper medical grade masks All vehicles are equipped with plexiglass to ensure a safer environment for both the driver and client Only 1 client or 2 guests who occupy the same room will be transported at a time All high touch areas will be sanitized by the volunteer driver (seatbelts, door handles, etc.) YOUR COMMITMENT As this is an important leadership volunteer position, we ask that you dedicate 6 months to this role.  You can pick from a regular weekly shift (i.e. Mondays from 8 am to 12 noon) or you can chose shifts a month in advance to fill in gaps.
