St. John's - Mount Pearl MS Walk- Event Day Volunteer

Description: The 2023 St. John's - Mount Pearl MS Walk is taking place Sunday May 28th 11:00am at Reid Community Centre in Mount Pearl! The MS Walk is a community-driven event for people living with or affected by Multiple Sclerosis as well as those who want to support our vision of creating a world free of MS. Tens of thousands of Canadians come together in their communities every May to participate, fundraise and volunteer in MS Walk to help find the cause and cure for this disease. These events would not be possible without the support of hundreds of dedicated volunteers given their time. There are various areas where volunteer help is needed to ensure that this event runs smoothly and participants have a great experience while they are walking to raise critical funds to support those effected by MS. Site Set Up/Wrap Up Crew:
- Unloading supplies and equipment
- Helping set up/tear down tents, tables, chairs, banner & signs
- Decorating and tidying the site, clean up post event
- Manage check in line ups, welcoming and directing participants
- Provide event info to participants and answer any questions
- Making a donation ask to participants who have not yet donated
- Help set up directional signage along route
- Alert participants of heavy traffic areas, hazards or changes on the route
- If needed, alert traffic that participants are crossing intersections. Route Marshalls should not attempt to stop oncoming traffic
- Cheer on participants
- Take photos of teams and participants at the start/finish line
- Capture general images of event participants and volunteers
- Encourage participants and teams to have their photos taken
- Help control line ups and sort through team name signs
- Set up food, beverage and supplies, restocking and cleaning away litter
- Help to clean up after event
- Ensuring the kids have a memorable experience by interacting with them and facilitating games and activities
- Cheer participants as they head out on the route and as they return
- When volunteers arrive, check off name on volunteer attendance list
- Make sure that everyone has completed a volunteer information form
- Hand out volunteer t-shirt, name tag and student letter
- Provide volunteer with their assignment and direct them to the designated area
- Energizing and Positive Attitude. A friendly face helps create a fun atmosphere!
- Passion for supporting the MS Community and funding MS research
- Self-motivated and reliable; able to fulfill duties on time
- Previous experience managing people is considered an asset
- Gain valuable experience and skills by supporting the organization of a well-recognized signature event while working with experienced organizing team members and comprehensive resources
- Contribute your time to an important cause and see your impact on the organization
- Obtain a reference letter

A Local Chapter is a branch of The Shoebox Project led entirely by volunteers.
On behalf of, and supported by, a trusted national registered charity, Local Chapters collect gifts and essentials from members of the community and distribute them through shelters and agencies to local women experiencing or at-risk-of homelessness.
What Does a Local Coordinator Do?A Local Coordinator determines a Chapter's goals based on the needs of local shelters and community agencies.
They lead and execute seasonal gift drives by recruiting local volunteers to help.
Chapters educate and build awareness of The Shoebox Project and our mission.
They encourage the community to support the Chapter's goals through Shoebox gifts, monetary donations and kind messages.

Description: Gather Oral Histories to Foster Empathy and Build your Podcasting Skills. The Empathy Squad is a hands-on, experiential-service-learning opportunity for diverse youth from across Canada aimed at creating meaningful connections and increasing understanding of one another through public engagement, facilitated conversations, active listening and presentation, aimed at capturing and preserving our country's collective community memory for generations to come. The Empathy Squad program is made possible by the Canada Service Corps. As a participant, you will: ✅ Acquire the knowledge and practical skills needed to produce high-quality audio stories: interviewing and recording techniques, audio-editing, narrative shaping, and sound design; ✅ Volunteer in service of your community, learn about what’s important to them through active listening and help foster empathy for their lived experiences; ✅ Experience hands-on learning alongside fellow future leaders and from industry professionals across the country. Program Expectations:
- Have access to strong internet connection and a laptop available on which you can download and install: Slack (Mac OS / Windows OS), Descript (find system requirements here), Google Chrome, Zoom;
- Attend scheduled Zoom sessions that consist of live demonstrations, instructional videos and feedback sharing from facilitators, Guest Artists and peers;
- Apply learnings by conducting interviews, using audio recording equipment, and completing assignments using audio-editing software, Descript;
- Engage with facilitators and peers using program communication platforms (Slack, Zoom, provided Empathy Squad email address);
- Commit 10-12 hours a week, including scheduled Zoom sessions and work in your own time.
- As a program funded by the Canada Service Corps, applicants must be aged 18 to 30 years at the start of the program, and reside in Canada for the duration of the program.
- Applications are open to individuals across the country.

After Stroke Peer Support Volunteer

Description: Calling all stroke survivors in Newfoundland! We are looking for 1:1 peer support volunteers across the province to volunteer in local hospitals. The After Stroke Peer Volunteer Program connects new stroke survivors or caregivers with peer volunteers who are stroke survivors or caregivers. The volunteers who support the program have a lived experience of the effects of a stroke, and utilize their experience to provide hope, encouragement, and emotional support to people who are beginning the recovery process. Tasks and Responsibilities
- Initiate and lead one-to-one conversations with patients in a respectful, calm, and supportive manner
- Encourage patients to participate and engage in conversation
- Share their stroke journey and provide hope and encouragement
- Respect the nature and extent to which patients engage
- Record and report volunteer hours and number visits to MODC Volunteer Engagement coordinator monthly
- Report any urgent concerns regarding the patient’s that arise during the visit (emotional and physical health) to hospital unit staff and MODC Volunteer Engagement Coordinator
- Will debrief with Volunteer Engagement Coordinator on a regular basis or when needed
- Introduce MODC After Stroke personalized case management program and community-based peer support programs
- Utilize the resource "Your Stroke Journey" by the Heart and Stroke foundation of Canada to stimulate conversation

Circle Volunteer with Virtual Circles of Support and Accountability Canada
Organization: Virtual Circles of Support and AccountabilityCategory: Social and Community Service
Description: Virtual Circles of Support and Accountability Canada is accepting volunteers to support individuals who have been convicted of sexual offences as they reintegrate into the community. Virtual CoSA volunteers will attend weekly virtual meetings (about 1 hour per week) to create a circle of support and accountability. This involves role-modelling pro-social behaviour, active listening, helping the individual access appropriate resources, celebrating all the successes during the reintegration period, and creating an environment of trust where the Core Member is equipped to make healthy choices and live out their commitment to a non-offending future. Experience in this field is not required, but volunteers should be interested in learning more about the criminal justice system and related topics. Orientation will be provided through a virtual platform. A one-year commitment is required. Hope Engagement Lead - CIBC Run for the Cure Event

The Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure is a 5k or 1k walk or run. It is the largest single-day, volunteer-led event in Canada in support of the breast cancer cause.
This year’s event will be taking place on Sunday, October 6, 2024.
COMMITTEE MEMBER OVERVIEW You are passionate about the breast cancer cause, well-connected in your community, and enjoy event planning. The ideal candidate for this volunteer role has a positive attitude, communication and interpersonal skills, and a strong sense of self-motivation and time management.
Knowledge and/or experience in any of the following responsibilities is considered an asset.
As the volunteer Hope Engagement Lead, you will be responsible for:
- Developing a Participant of Hope outreach strategy to increase participation.
- Creating a meaningful and memorable event experience for Participants of Hope
- Designing a fun, engaging, and inclusive Hope Lounge, in collaboration with the Run Day Experience Lead and Corporate Outreach Lead.
- Communicating with registered Participants of Hope throughout the event season.
- Identifying Participant of Hope storytellers and/or spokespeople.
- Connecting with the Metastatic Breast Cancer (mBC) Team in your local community
Participants of Hope include breast cancer survivors, people living with breast cancer, people living with metastatic breast cancer (mBC), and those who carry a genetic risk for the disease (BRCA1 or BRCA2).
TIME COMMITMENT
- This is a 6-month commitment (May through October).
- Attending local committee meetings (generally bi-weekly to monthly).
- Independent role work/responsibilities (approx. 2-4 hours per month).
- Must be available over the event weekend (September 30 & October 1).
