Volunteers Wanted for BMO Walk So Kids Can Talk Supporting Kids Help Phone

Description: We are currently seeking event day volunteer support for our upcoming BMO Walk so Kids Can Talk, in 17 communities across Canada. BMO Walk so Kids Can Talk is a 5 km, family friendly event that takes place on Sunday, May 7,2023 ! Support youth mental health and well-being in your community by volunteering on event day. At Kids Help Phone, we are grateful to our committed and courageous volunteers, who are essential to achieving our mission – ensuring every young person has the support they need, in the way they need it most. Volunteer Roles: This is a one day volunteer event on Sunday, May 7, 2023. Volunteers will be needed for approximately 8 hours on the day of the event. Logistics Volunteer: Working alongside Kids Help Phone staff, this role will ensure all site logistics are in place and ready to go. This will include helping with set up and tear down. People helping in this role will still be able to do the Walk if they choose to do so. Event Experience Volunteer:  Monitor checkpoints along the route and the start and finish line; cheering, entertaining, motivating and providing assistance for Walkers. People helping in this role will not be able to do the Walk. Food & Beverage Volunteer: Organize onsite food and beverage distribution and ensure all health and safety protocols are being followed. These volunteers will be required to wear gloves and masks when handling food. People helping in this role will not be able to do the Walk. Guest Services Volunteer:   This role is a key function at a Walk site. You will collect fundraising monies, review pledge form information, and answer general questions. You will be required to attend a 30-minute training session 3-4 days before the Walk. People helping in this role will still be able to do the Walk if they choose to do so.

St. John's - Mount Pearl MS Walk- Event Day Volunteer

Description: The 2023 St. John's - Mount Pearl MS Walk is taking place Sunday May 28th 11:00am at Reid Community Centre in Mount Pearl! The MS Walk is a community-driven event for people living with or affected by Multiple Sclerosis as well as those who want to support our vision of creating a world free of MS. Tens of thousands of Canadians come together in their communities every May to participate, fundraise and volunteer in MS Walk to help find the cause and cure for this disease. These events would not be possible without the support of hundreds of dedicated volunteers given their time. There are various areas where volunteer help is needed to ensure that this event runs smoothly and participants have a great experience while they are walking to raise critical funds to support those effected by MS. Site Set Up/Wrap Up Crew:
  • Unloading supplies and equipment
  • Helping set up/tear down tents, tables, chairs, banner & signs
  • Decorating and tidying the site, clean up post event
Check In Greeter:
  • Manage check in line ups, welcoming and directing participants
Check in:
  • Provide event info to participants and answer any questions
  • Making a donation ask to participants who have not yet donated
Route Marshall:
  • Help set up directional signage along route
  • Alert participants of heavy traffic areas, hazards or changes on the route
  • If needed, alert traffic that participants are crossing intersections. Route Marshalls should not attempt to stop oncoming traffic
  • Cheer on participants
Photographers and Assistants:
  • Take photos of teams and participants at the start/finish line
  • Capture general images of event participants and volunteers
  • Encourage participants and teams to have their photos taken
  • Help control line ups and sort through team name signs
Food & Beverage:
  • Set up food, beverage and supplies, restocking and cleaning away litter
  • Help to clean up after event
Kids Activity Area: 
  • Ensuring the kids have a memorable experience by interacting with them and facilitating games and activities
Start/Finish Line Cheer Squad:
  • Cheer participants as they head out on the route and as they return
Volunteer Check-in: 
  • When volunteers arrive, check off name on volunteer attendance list
  • Make sure that everyone has completed a volunteer information form
  • Hand out volunteer t-shirt, name tag and student letter
  • Provide volunteer with their assignment and direct them to the designated area

Empathy Squad *VIRTUAL* Audio Storytelling and Podcasting (Winter 2024)

Description: Gather Oral Histories to Foster Empathy and Build your Podcasting Skills. The Empathy Squad is a hands-on, experiential-service-learning opportunity for diverse youth from across Canada aimed at creating meaningful connections and increasing understanding of one another through public engagement, facilitated conversations, active listening and presentation, aimed at capturing and preserving our country's collective community memory for generations to come.  The Empathy Squad program is made possible by the Canada Service Corps.    As a participant, you will:  ✅ Acquire the knowledge and practical skills needed to produce high-quality audio stories: interviewing and recording techniques, audio-editing, narrative shaping, and sound design;  ✅ Volunteer in service of your community, learn about what’s important to them through active listening and help foster empathy for their lived experiences;  ✅ Experience hands-on learning alongside fellow future leaders and from industry professionals across the country.    Program Expectations: 
  • Have access to strong internet connection and a laptop available on which you can download and install: Slack (Mac OS / Windows OS), Descript (find system requirements here), Google Chrome, Zoom; 
  • Attend scheduled Zoom sessions that consist of live demonstrations, instructional videos and feedback sharing from facilitators, Guest Artists and peers; 
  • Apply learnings by conducting interviews, using audio recording equipment, and completing assignments using audio-editing software, Descript; 
  • Engage with facilitators and peers using program communication platforms (Slack, Zoom, provided Empathy Squad email address); 
  • Commit 10-12 hours a week, including scheduled Zoom sessions and work in your own time.

Hope Engagement Lead - CIBC Run for the Cure Event

Knowledge and/or experience in any of the following responsibilities is considered an asset.

As the volunteer Hope Engagement Lead, you will be responsible for:

  • Developing a Participant of Hope outreach strategy to increase participation.
  • Creating a meaningful and memorable event experience for Participants of Hope
  • Designing a fun, engaging, and inclusive Hope Lounge, in collaboration with the Run Day Experience Lead and Corporate Outreach Lead.
  • Communicating with registered Participants of Hope throughout the event season.
  • Identifying Participant of Hope storytellers and/or spokespeople.
  • Connecting with the Metastatic Breast Cancer (mBC) Team in your local community

Participants of Hope include breast cancer survivors, people living with breast cancer, people living with metastatic breast cancer (mBC), and those who carry a genetic risk for the disease (BRCA1 or BRCA2).

TIME COMMITMENT

  • This is a 6-month commitment (May through October).
  • Attending local committee meetings (generally bi-weekly to monthly).
  • Independent role work/responsibilities (approx. 2-4 hours per month).
  • Must be available over the event weekend (September 30 & October 1).

Food & Beverage Lead: Organize onsite food and beverage distribution at the event and ensure all health and safety permits, codes and licenses are attained and followed. (I.e. Covid protocols). Sponsorship and Recognition Lead: Raising funds for Kids Help Phone’s 24/7 e-mental health services is the overall goal of our fundraising events. Help us stay open and accessible by leading the committee in sponsorship and participant recruitment efforts. Help to ensure our participants and sponsors feel supported and appreciated the whole way through, by staying connected with them, providing tips and celebrating their successes. Promotion and Recruitment Lead: Spread the word! Share details about the event by posting on community websites, social media pages, contributing to community partners and sponsors intranets or internal newsletters, working with local influencers and sourcing local media support.  Don’t forget about word of mouth!   Youth Representative: Creating a meaningful event for our youth audience is essential. As a youth facing organization, the Youth Representative will bring the perspective we need, in order to ensure everyone is represented in our event planning and execution efforts.
