Volunteer Host Families Needed in Northeast Avalon (June 29-August 10th, 2019)

Organization: YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth/YMCA of Greater Toronto-YMCA Summer Work Student Exchage
Category: Children & Youth
Description: Supported by Canadian Heritage, the YMCA Summer Work Student Exchange is a national six-week work and language exchange program providing 16-17 year old youth with the opportunity to improve their second official language skills, gain employment experience through a paid work placement and participate in cultural activities on the weekends. The program is entering its 13th summer and involves over 600 youth from across the country. Youth who apply from Northeast Avalon travel to Quebec from June 29-August 10th. In order for youth from Northeast Avalon to participate they need a host family here for an incoming Quebec participant. We need 5 host families in Northeast Avalon as we have 5 youth in the  area without a host family. This may prevent them from being able to go. Host Families provide a safe and welcoming place for youth to stay during the summer, provide meals and ensure that an adult is in the home overnight. Participants and hosts are supported by a YMCA staff member who visits at least twice throughout the summer and are available by email and phone. Grocery gift cards are available to help offset some of the costs of hosting. Host families have the benefit of having a lasting impact on two youth, one from Quebec and one from Newfoundland, and will develop a personal relationship with the Quebec youth during their stay. Families will also learn about different perspectives, habits language and culture, and share theirs, without leaving home! It is a fabulous learning experience for the entire family. For more information go to www.summer-work.com. To apply go to https://bit.ly/2YKb1bn to complete an alternate host application before June 21st. Questions? Contact Meghann Crawford at 902-718-7998 or meghann.crawford@halifax.ymca.ca
