Feast of Cohen (LSPU Hall)

Category: Arts and Entertainment
Dates: January 4, 2017 - January 7, 2017

***SOLD OUT***

8pm

A sprig of holly is back in the poster for this year’s Feast of Cohen!
The 17th annual Feast of Cohen returns to the LSPU Hall and its original season and stage, this January 4 – 7.

A celebration of Canadian poet songwriter Leonard Cohen; Feast of Cohen has been a tradition with the local holiday audience of Cohen fans for the past decade and a half.

The dark days of the early winter solstice and the intimate setting of the LSPU Hall stage proved to be a perfect fit for an evening of strictly Cohen.

Putting the show up at the Hall this January will be like a “coming home, coming full circle” for producer Vicky Hynes and members of her Feast of Cohen troupe.

Opening night marks the 17th anniversary of the held over performance of the first Feast of Cohen which played to a sold out jam packed Hall on December 28, 2000.

Leonard Cohen passed away on November 7, weeks after the release of his last music recording at the age of 82; leaving a legacy of numerous songs, poems, writings, sketches and several novels.

This year’s program will include 30 selections from Cohen’s vast catalogue of songs; ranging from his debut LP of December 1967 “The Songs of Leonard Cohen” ; to his newly released CD “You Want It Darker” .

Joining Vicky Hynes is your host Des Walsh and band The Beautiful Losers: Sandy Morris, Kelly Russell, Derek Pelley, Andrew McCarthy, Dave & Geoff Panting; and performances by Jill Porter, Bryan Hennessey, Lori Cooper, Jenny Gear, Sean Panting, Colleen Power and Liz Solo.

Also featuring a spectacular special guest line up of some of our best Newfoundland musicians and songwriters: Amelia Curran, Roger Howse, Kellie Loder, Rube & Rake, and Brianna Gosse.

There are no tickets available as all four nights are completely sold out.

Folk Night at the Ship Pub

Presented by the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Arts Society, Folk Night at the Ship is St. John's oldest continually running event (started 1974) and regularly draws a sizeable crowd each Wednesday night, sometimes 100 souls or more and rarely less than 50.

The evening starts at 9 p.m. (sharp!) with a one hour set from the featured performer, then a half hour open mike session with door prizes consisting of gift certificates from our sponsors, and often great concert tickets! The evening closes with a half hour final set from the feature act and is typically done by 11:30 p.m.

The cover charge is $5 and music ranges from solo songwriters, traditional Newfoundland, blues, klezmer and all styles in between.

In addition, there are often special events (such as the Folk Festival Launch!) and the last Wednesday of every month is reserved for a traditional tune session that often has 20 or more players in attendance.
